Academic Support Services
The Academic Writing Centre offers advice and support on all aspects of academic writing to all students of IT Sligo, both on-campus and online. The centre is located on the top floor of the Yeats Library on campus. In this dedicated space, students can avail of 1:1 appointments with experienced writing tutors in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
The Maths Support Centre is aimed at all students studying maths modules or maths components to get any assistance they may need. Many capable students, for a variety of reasons, may find it difficult to achieve the required standards in mathematics to support their degree studies. Support is offered in a variety of ways from individual consultation to small tutorial groups.
Engineering Support Centre offer additional student support to first year students completing the Electronic Principles module in the form of online tutorials and 1:1 to support.
English Language Support
IT Sligo students can avail of free online language support. This programme of support is suitable for any student for whom English is not your first language. It does not matter what your current level of English is – you can be beginner, fairly fluent or very fluent. The trainer will tailor sessions, supports and resources to suit individuals specific needs.
Our Learning Support Tutors provides support to students who have dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties. Students who have been diagnosed should contact the Learning Support Tutor early in the academic year to develop their Individual Support Plan.
Services available include:
- Dyslexia screening
- Study Skills information
- Use of assistive technology and the assistive technology suite
- Reasonable accommodation at Examinations.
- Applications to the Department of Education and Skills to the Fund for Students with Disabilities on behalf of students with up to date psychological assessments
- Liaising with relevant staff to ensure students achieve their full potential at Institute of Technology Sligo.
- One to one or group support
The Yeats Library at IT Sligo is a student-centred environment, providing a range of study zones over three floors. It is situated centrally on campus, just off the main concourse.
There are study rooms available on each floor for group work and students have access to over 50,000 books in print. Access is also provided to a further 100,000+ electronic books as well as a wide range of journals, electronic databases, films, maps, official publications and other resources.
First year students will receive an introduction to the library early in the academic year, and the library cooperates with teaching staff to arrange more advanced sessions on specific resources for students engaged in assignments or research.
