At the Department of Environmental Science we're confident you will be impressed by our broad range of programmes. Our aims are to provide you with the learning, hands-on skills, work experience and competencies that employers are seeking so that graduates are career-ready on their first day at work.

We promise you a good learning environment in classrooms and laboratories with plenty of field trips and site visits. There is one-to-one help available from lecturers and from our learning supports. If you are looking for a course with good variety and you want a career with plenty of opportunities to work both inside and outdoors, our Department has the Programme for you! Make a real difference to the environment, increase the health and safety of your workmates, or conserve the past in a range of employments that will reward and interest. If you are not sure which Science interests you, apply for the General Science at Level 6 or 8 and make the choice in second year. Check out the Programme pages to see which one suits you.

What type of student are you?

Science and/or Geography, AgScience and/or History and/or Home Economics are probably your favourite subjects and you will have an interest in present and/or past environments as well as how science can provide solutions for a sustainable future.

Courses span from Higher certificate (Level 6), Ordinary Degree (Level 7) and Honours Degree (Level 8). i.e. provide Environmental Science with Ecology (Levels 6, 7 and 8), Occupational Safety and Health ( Levels 7 and 8), Applied Archaeology ( Levels 6, 7 and 8) and our broader General Science (Levels 6 and 8).




Meet the Head of Department

Professor Frances Lucy
Professor Frances Lucy

Professor Frances Lucy first joined IT Sligo in 1992, lecturing, developing courses and researching in the Department of Environmental Science, before becoming Head of Department in 2016. She is an internationally recognised expert on invasive alien species and co-ordinates and partners projects for the Irish EPA, Interreg and for DG Environment in the EU commission.

Frances is also Director of IT Sligo’s Centre for Environmental Research Innovation and Sustainability (CERIS), former chair of the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland and current President of INVASIVESNET, the international association on invasive species (
