This two year course is designed as a foundation course in science and builds key skill sets in analytical science related to your interests and the current demand in our economy. The course provides you with a core foundation in applied science with an emphasis on hands-on practical laboratory science. The subjects studied in Year one include core Science modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology and Learning to Learn. There are elective choices in Year one which allows you to experience the different Science programmes available in the School of Science. In the second year of the course, you transfer to one of four programmes and gain a Higher Certificate. These programmes are:
BSc Honours Environmental Science with Ecology
BSc Honours Occupational Safety and Health
BSc Honours Medical Biotechnology
BSc Honours Pharmaceutical Science with Drug Development
We have embedded a range of fundamental practical science skills in this programme:
- Analytical science skills, practical skills in monitoring environmental quality
- Practical laboratory skills in methods used by analytical scientists
- Environmental Science and Occupational Safety and Health
- Biochemistry, microbiology and analytical chemistry
- DNA technology, immunology, environmental science, pharmaceuticals and organic/physical chemistry
- Data analysis
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Communication and information technology

A science subject at Leaving Certificate is not a requirement for this course.
Graduates are employable as scientists and occupational safety and health officers in a wide range of industries including the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device, medical diagnostic, food and beverage, construction and biotechnology sectors. These industries have a high profile in the Western and North Western regions.
Graduates will also be suitable for employment in government and public agencies as analysts and environmental scientists in a broad range of roles, including environmental protection.
Following completion of First Year students progress onto one of the following programmes: Environmental Science with Ecology,Occupational safety and health, Pharmaceutical Science or Medical Biotechnology.
In the second year of the course, you transfer to one of four programmes and gain a Higher Certificate. These programmes are: Environmental Science with Ecology (as below), Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), Medical Biotechnology (MB) and Pharmaceutical Science with Drug Development (PS). For modules in Year 2 of OSH, MB and PS, go to those Programme pages.
Once the Level 6 has been completed, students can progress to Level 7 and Level 8 of their selected programme.
