Meet the Head of Department

Diane O'Brien

Diane O’Brien became Head of Department in 2018. She has extensive experience in a variety of roles but decided to pursue her love of computing full time. Having obtained a Degree in Business from the University of Ulster, she became a computer technician at Ballycastle High School in Northern Ireland.

She took up the role of lecturer in IT Sligo for both the School of Business and the School of Science in 1995, returning to the University of Ulster to complete her MSc in Computing and Information Systems. Since returning to Sligo, Diane has developed and lectured on various computing programmes and has been chair for a number of programmes over the years and more recently the Higher Diploma in Computing (online).

Diane is extremely student focussed, organising and delivering summer camps in IT Sligo to promote computing to primary and secondary level students, as well as developing annual CanSat (mini-satellites) projects to engage these students in the area of computing and electronic engineering. She has been involved in research on how using technology can enhance teaching and learning and has presented at the EdTech conference 2017.
